Camping Vegan Style

Vegan Camping

Camping. Some people love it. Some people hate it. Personally we love getting out in nature and breathing in fresh air, going for hikes, and marvelling at creatures in their natural habitat. And food always seems to taste much better after doing some physical exercise in nature. Having said that, we also love getting back to my own bed. Camping mattresses always seem to be slightly uncomfortable   😮

This is our first non food post. We’ll be doing more as we have some upcoming trips planned. Stay tuned!

We found camping vegan style so easy! We made and prepared some delicious meals while away. All you need is a gas stove and a saucepan, some utensils and cutlery and you’re laughing. Find a list of camping essentials below.

Things to Do while camping:

Go on a hike and take it slow. I know. It’s obvious, hiking while camping. But don’t rush. Take your time and drink it all in. It’s amazing what you can see if you slow down.

Make damper. It’s fun to make a fire and have a go at making damper. You’d be surprised at how easy it is. Find a stick. Wrap the damper around it and you’ve got a tasty snack after dinner. Drizzle it with maple syrup or chocolate sauce for an even tastier snack.

Play uno. This is by far the best camping game, EVER.

Read books. In our day to day life, we get so caught up that we don’t take the time to read. It’s great to relax and read a book without a care in the world, except for what you’re going to eat next.

Eat Food. Make delicious food and eat it.

What to take Vegan Camping:

Food. (this includes an esky, and ice blocks) Some other necessities include water (at least 15 litres for 3 days camping, as you need it for drinking and rinsing up dishes), dishwashing liquid, dish cloths, tea towels, olive oil or nuttelex.  Non-refrigerated items are wonderful, such as cans of beans or chick peas, potatoes (jacket potatoes are an excellent vegan camping dinner idea), tinned tomatoes, as well as noodles, some fresh herbs and spices, and the old favourite, salt and pepper. It’s incredible with how little you can make the tastiest meals.

Extra things to look out for:

Make sure your car is in excellent running order. The last thing you want is to be in the middle of nowhere and have your car acting all weird. We speak from experience on this one! Keep spare oil and a few litres of spare water in your car.

Keep an eye out for snakes, especially while going to the outdoor toilet in the middle of the night. (yes, we speak from experience on this one too. Lucky Josh had the head torch with him!). Oh, toilet paper is also a great idea.
