Salt and Pepper Tofu

This Salt and Pepper Tofu recipe is for those who’s New Years resolutions were to eat exactly what they want this year. What better way to start a New Year than with some deep fried goodness (or shallow fried in this case!).

Salt and Pepper TofuThis has to be one of my most favourite recipes! There’s something just so yum about crispy tofu and salt and pepper. I guess it’s the deep fried salty oily thing!

I used wholemeal flour in this one – because I ran out of plain flour – and I’ve got to tell you – it works! It actually works! I’m sure it’ll also work with plain flour if you don’t have wholemeal. I also used soda water for the batter, it seems to give it a lighter, airier taste.

For the coating, I use cracked pepper and black salt in this recipe. Josh and I are obsessed with this stuff! Worth getting if you can find it! Otherwise just use a Himalayan sea salt. We use it in lots of our recipes including Palak Paneer, our Smoky Cheesy Vegan Mayo and our Vegan Smoked Salmon Breakfast Bowl!

If you have a deep fryer, then by all means use it. I’m not sure this would work in an Air Fryer as I feel the mixture would drip too much. We shallow fried ours in a fry pan filled about 1/4 full with canola oil and once they were cooked drained them on some paper towel and sprinkled with salt and pepper. We served them with our Cheesy Smoky Vegan Mayo and it was super scrumptious!

Ingredients
  • 230g firm tofu pressed
For the Batter:
  • 1 cup wholemeal flour
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 tsp dried oregano
  • pinch of chilli flakes
  • 1/4 tsp black salt
  • 1/4 tsp cracked black pepper
  • 1 cup soda water +1 Tbsp
Extra:
  • 1/2 cup wholemeal flour for dusting
  • oil for frying
  • 1 tsp black salt
  • 1 tsp cracked black pepper
Instructions
  1. Whisk the batter ingredients to a smooth consistency.

  2. Press the tofu to get all the juice out. Sometimes I skip this part and just squeeze as much water as I can without breaking the tofu. Cut into bite size pieces.

  3. Fill a shallow fry pan about 1/4 full with oil (we used canola oil for this) and heat it up. Dip each tofu piece in the extra wholemeal flour and then dunk into the batter, then once the oil is hot, fry them for a few minutes on each side until golden brown. Drain on a paper towel. Mix the salt and pepper together and sprinkle over the tofu as desired. Serve hot! Enjoy!
