Vegan Feta Taste Testing

Hi! Well we thought we’d do something a little different, aside from a recipe or a travel blog post, we thought we’d do a vegan feta taste test!

We filmed the whole thing, which you can find on our YouTube channel. The video is at the bottom of the page, so if you’d prefer to watch it, scroll on down! Otherwise, read at your leisure!

The Vegan Dairy

One of my favourite cheeses ever, is The Vegan Dairy’s Persian Feta. Pre-vegan I used to love Persian feta – the creamy, oily texture just did it for me. This Persian feta was all where all my vegan feta dreams came true! It’s soft and flavourful, and the oil is good too. I love having this on toast with avocado, on crackers, or just anyway really. I have been known to eat it directly from the jar with a spoon! I love the jars too, as they are great for re-use. The Vegan Dairy are based in Melbourne, but they have stockists all around Australia. It’s a bit of a higher price, retailing for around $13.95, but well worth the price!

Lauds Plant Based Cheeses

Lauds Plant Based Foods is based in Tasmania, but their cheeses are slowly making their way around Australia – and for good reason too! All their range is incredible. They have two fetas – a Persian style soft feta, made out of almonds, and a hard feta. The Persian feta was one of both Josh and my personal faves – soft, creamy and delicate, with an amazing flavour. Almost melt in your mouth goodness. Perfect to snack on with crackers or cucumber rounds, also great in salads.

Vegan Feta Taste TestingThe Almond Greek Feta was more firm, and at first we didn’t love the taste, but the more we ate this, the more we liked it. I loved it in a salad, or crumbled on top of a soup.

Fine Cultures

This is a local business based on the Gold Coast – so far their cheeses are on the Gold Coast and Brisbane. Hopefully they will expand to other parts of Australia soon. They have a Lemon and Dill Almond Feta – which is a baked feta. I really loved the flavour of this – I thought the lemon and dill complemented the cheese well, and the oil they used was good too. Excellent in a salad, or with roast veggies.

MyLife Bio

My Life Bio have two fetas on the market, one is their bio feta and more recently they have launched Bio Marinated. You can find them at your local Woolworths. The Bio Marinated was a really delicious, soft cheese, but not too soft. It was aromatic with hints of garlic and pepper and sitting as perfect little squares in the oil. Delicious on crackers or in a salad. It would also be great baked into a spanikopita or something similar.

Their bio Feta was one of our faves out of the hard cheeses, it crumbled quite well and had a really nice taste. It has quite a smooth texture, but the taste was on point. The great thing about this cheese is that it is a reasonable price range, and can be found at your local supermarket.

Bute Island Foods

You may know this brand as the Sheese cheeses! Usually their cheddar is my go-to, because it’s tasty, affordable, and melts on a toastie. I wasn’t too much of a fan of their feta though – it just tasted like a cheese, not really a feta, kind of similar to their cheddar, but a bit more bland. Would probably still be good on toasties – but as a feta, it wasn’t my favourite!

Wise Bunny

Wise Bunny also do a yogurt range that Josh and I have been liking recently. When I looked up their website, I noticed they also do cheeses – a Fetta, and a Gouda. In short, I think that they should stick to making yogurt – though I haven’t tried their Gouda yet. The fetta was quite firm, almost rubber-like, and didn’t have much flavour. It was also quite difficult to find – they are not stocked at the local supermarkets. You would maybe find this in an IGA or Foodworks.

Botanical Cuisine

Botanical Cuisine are based in Melbourne and make dips, aiolis and spreadable cheeses. Their Persian Style Macadamia Feta is so creamy, smooth and delicate with amazing flavours. The thyme really works. It was definitely another favourite of the softer style fetas.

GreenVie

Green Vie Foods have a range of vegan cheeses and spreads, I found this brand in a Flannerys store, up here on the Gold Coast, but they may also be found in the cruelty free shop. Failing that, you can order the GreenVie range online from Vegan Perfection! And while you’re there, you may as well check out their range of other amazing vegan food that they import! This was another of our favourites in the hard feta department. It crumbled really well and had a nice texture – was perfectly salty too. It is a toss up between this and the Bio feta for our faves in the harder style cheese. Loved this in a salad and would also work well in baked goods.

Damona

Damona is a plant based cheese company based in Melbourne, their feta is a baked almond feta. In terms of taste it was nice, with a hint of rosemary. The texture isn’t smooth, but a bit rough, would be good for crumbling. I wasn’t keen on the oil they have used, it wasn’t that tasty. It would be a great accompaniment to roast veggies, or on top of a pasta.

There are a few other vegan fetas that I wasn’t able to get my hands on – they are Yay Foods feta – I have tried this feta, and it is absolutely delicious! These guys are based in Melbourne, but I’m sure you can buy their feta from the cruelty free shops. There is also AVS organic foods – they do a feta too, but I haven’t tried it, so can’t give any feedback on it.
