Vegan Eats in Hobart

I was honestly really surprised at the Vegan scene in Hobart! It seemed that almost every place we saw had at least one, if not more vegan options on their menu.

We ate really well there! Here are some of the places we ate at:

Born in Brunswick – We stopped here for breakfast one morning. It’s not completely vegan, but they have a few vegan things on their menu, including this Banh mi roll and snickers smoothie. We had a few Banh Mi rolls while in Hobart and this was the one with the best flavour, absolutely delicious, and the snickers smoothie was great too!

Rude Boy – Vegan chicken!! WTF! These guys do a vegan fried chicken menu!! Wowsers! So, you pick the size of what you want, whether you want fried or grilled (We all went for fried, lol), choose your coating from salt n pepper, old bay, jerk, 7 spice, hot or super hot, and then choose your sauce: gravy, cheese dusting, miso caramel, rum BBQ etc. It was really, really good!! And their sweet potato chips were amazing!!

Veg Bar – this is the first place we saw when we arrived in Hobart. It is all vegan place with a good menu, friendly staff and a nice atmosphere. They have some nice looking desserts in their cabinet too. We got their Greek Gyro wrap and their KFC (Korean Fried Chick’n) Burger. They were both delicious. I fully expected to come back here, but there were so many options around we didn’t need have a chance.

MARKETS IN HOBART

Street Eats Franko – every Friday, 4pm to 9pm in Franklin Square, this is a bustling little market with live music and a great ambience with all the stalls around a fountain. We found our good friends Harissa Hobart, and had their loaded nachos, lemon tart, masala soda and cauliflower pie. All so yum!! Vanessa and Ariel run the store and they are lovely. Vanessa gave me some great tips on other vegan places to visit while we were in Hobart too.

We also tried Yeastie Beastie donuts who have vegan options on their menu. OMG they were so good! We got the apricot sauce and vegan custard, and also a lemon flavour one which was amazing. We also got some vegan dumplings from another vendor there, which were tasty too.

Salamanca Market – held every Saturday, 8.30 to 3pm, this market is a must do if you’re in Hobart on a Saturday. There’s one vegan vendor there called Lotus Pantry. Aaron is the owner and he is really nice. We got a tempura mushroom burger from him, some dumplings with satay sauce, and a matcha drink.

We also got some vegan fudge at these markets, and some nice little relishes etc to take home with us. Great place to try some local fare.

Farmgate Market – every Sunday 8.30am till 1pm. We got the most incredible eggplant bao from Seoul Street Korean Food, it was so fresh and tasty!

Also you must check out Soy oy oy at this market – they have an amazing feta, a brie (in a jar), soy milk, tofu and tempeh.

Right where Farmgate markets are, you’ll find Bury Me Standing – their main thing is Bagels, and they have some awesome vegan options! Also they later told me that most of their sweet treats there are vegan too. We went to this place twice, they were SO GOOD!

MONA – apparently a trip to Hobart is not complete without going to MONA, but that’s a post for a travel blog post (which hopefully I’ll get around to doing at some stage). We decided to eat at the Faro Bar and Restaurant for lunch so we could experience the Seen Unseen exhibition, which was ‘interesting’ haha. Basically you go into a big ball looking thing, lie on a couch and have strobe lights coming at you with all different patterns. I didn’t like it much, but it seems some people do.

Anyway, on to the food. They had a separate vegan menu. We ordered a la carte, but they do have a set menu too. We had two dishes, a chargrilled eggplant one, which was pretty disappointing in my opinion (I totally could’ve made it at home), and the Roast field mushroom one, which blew my mind. We also ordered a Coconut panna cotta dessert, which was ok, but not amazing. We also got an earl grey mocktail drink which was delicious! They had a little band playing which I can only describe as eccentric.

Circle of Life Doughnut Co – has vegan donut options. We got this one which was like a krispy creme – absolutely delicious!! Loved it. So if you’re after a sweet treat in Hobart city, it’s well worth a look!

Ti Ama restaurant – This is the first place we ate at when we finished the Three Capes Trek hike, and we wolfed down the food in literally seconds. It was pretty good, but I’ve had better. Definitely what we needed after 4 days of eaten packet food though!

Fox Friday Craft Brewery – there’s lots of neat little brewerys around Hobart town. This one had some great vegan options, we got the buffalo cauli wings as a snack – they were spicy, but yum!

Wafu Sushi – this is a little sushi place hidden in a shopping centre called Centrepoint. Vanessa from Harissa Hobart had told me about it and we just happened to stumble across it when we walked in there to go to the toilet. They do some vegan sushi, using black rice. I got a couple of rolls and they were tasty!

One night we got some Ice cream from Van Diemens Land Creamery – a cute little place on the harbour – only some of the sorbet flavours were vegan, but they were tasty.

The Banh Mi n’ Grill – this is a little place in the middle of town, tucked away behind some shops. They have one vegan option with mushrooms which was quite tasty. The rolls were so fresh, and it was yum, but I did prefer the banh mi at Born in Brunswick.
